What's Happening around Miami
The NAGVA 26th Annual Championship Event is almost here! In preparation for your trip to Miami Beach, we have compiled some important information about other events and happenings during your stay. There are several events going which will bring over 300,000 visitors to the area while we are there! Below you will find information on these events as well as some safety and transportation tips from the Miami Beach Police Department.
- Urban Beach Week
- "The largest Urban Festival in the world that caters toward the Hip Hop Generation from 23 and over!", says one of the many unofficial web sites for this huge event. The city is expecting anywhere from 250,000 to over 350,000 visitors to descend upon South Beach for Urban Beach Week. This event does not have an official organizing body, so there is not one complete source of information on the events and scheduling. Check out BlackBeachweek.com and Urbanbeachweek.com for more information.
- White Party Ft. Lauderdale
- The newly renovated club Jetset in Ft. Lauderdale is hosting a White Party weekend with Events with an all white theme and DJs Able (Saturday night), Manny Lehman & Tracy Young (Sunday Night). Check out GarySantis.com (Events tab) for more information.
- Sizzle!
- "America's most celebrated and anticipated black gay event!" will take place in Miami Beach over memorial Day Weekend. For more information and tickets to this 5 day event, check out http://www.sizzlemiami.com. Billed as South Florida's Black Gay Pride, there is a complete lineup of events posted on their web site.
Transportation & Safety
- NAGVA Shuttle
- In order to improve your experience and assist in navigating a very busy South Beach, NAGVA will run a shuttle bus from the host hotel to the Convention Center for members and guest staying in NAGVA rooms at the Deauville. Players taking the NAGVA shuttles will not be penalized for any delays in arrival due to a late running shuttle.
- Ft. Lauderdale Booze Bus
- NAGVA will operate a shuttle to the Fort Lauderdale bars Sunday evening after the Awards Banquet. Tickets will be sold at Registration. Seating is limited. The current plan is for the buses to depart at 10 AM and return at 2 AM. (Timing subject to change. See Complete information at Registration.)
- Safety
- Personal safety is always an issue and we would like to remind everyone to be aware of their surroundings. Earlier this year, members were accosted while walking at a tournament. This should serve as a reminder to keep your eyes and ears open. With 300,000 visitors to South Beach, safety is even a greater concern. The Miami Beach Police Department will have their full police force plus additional officers from other local law enforcement agencies on duty 24 hours a day for everyone's protection. If you feel threatened at any time, the Miami Beach Police ask that you contact them right immediately.
- Traffic
- If you are driving please be aware that certain lanes along Collins Avenue and Washington Boulevard in South Beach may be blocked off as well as parts of Ocean Drive. this will cause significant traffic delays. According to City Hall, the automobile traffic begins building shortly after noon, so plan accordingly.
